A long, narrow island in the Ou River just north of central Wenzhou, about 2.8 km long and no more than 400 m wide. It is the city's landmark and symbol, and a ferry crosses to it from the south bank in minutes. It was once two small islands, each with a temple built in the 9th and 10th centuries and a pagoda beside it; in 1137 the channel between them was filled, joining them into one, and the Jiangxin Temple was built on the new ground. The East and West pagodas still stand at either end of the island, among old trees and riverside paths. Tickets cost CNY 30 including the return ferry, and it is open from 8 am to 11 pm, with ticket sales stopping at 7.30 pm; in the evening there is a light show on the island, per visitor guides.
