A well-known natural area about 90 km from central Kunming, in Jiuxiang, a township autonomous for the Yi and the Muslim Hui peoples, famous for a vast network of karst caves, deep valleys and underground rivers. The caves lie along the banks of the Maitian River in several layers formed over millions of years; visitors pass huge rock halls, underground waterfalls and limestone terraces like rice fields, and a narrow gorge crossed by boat. Its highlights are a thundering twin underground waterfall inside the cave and a vast hall counted among China's largest cave chambers, with the rock formations lit in colour. Tickets are about CNY 90, with the internal cable car about CNY 30, open 08:00–18:00, per visitor guides. The visit involves a lot of walking and steps, so wear comfortable shoes; it pairs well with the nearby Stone Forest.
