The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, the JK Bridge, crosses Lake Paranoá to link central Brasília with its eastern shore, and is named after the president who built the new capital in the 1950s. It opened on 15 December 2002 and quickly became a city landmark, designed by the architect Alexandre Chan with the engineer Mário Vila Verde. It runs 1,200 metres, its deck carried by three asymmetrical steel arches 61 metres high that cross diagonally over the water like a stone skipping across the lake, with cables hanging from them on alternating sides. Chan won the Gustav Lindenthal Medal at the International Bridge Conference in 2003 for the design. Walkways for pedestrians and cyclists run along both sides. The best time to see it is sunset, when the arches are reflected in the lake before being lit up at night, and the eastern shore near the bridge gives a full view of all three arches.
