Joanópolis is a small town of about 13,000 people in the Mantiqueira foothills of São Paulo state, on the Minas Gerais border, at 906 metres, drawing many visitors from São Paulo and Campinas for its climate and scenery. Its first village grew between 1730 and 1740 as a settlement of explorers on the Jacareí stream, and in 1878 local people met and chose the site of the present town. It is playfully known as the «capital of the werewolf», with references to the folk legend all over its streets and stories. Mountains and waterfalls surround it, the best known being the Cachoeira dos Pretos, one of the tallest in São Paulo state, along with mountain trails near Pico do Selado on the border with Monte Verde. It is easy to reach from the Fernão Dias highway.
