The Jounieh Téléphérique, called the «Téléphérique du Liban» by visitors, is one of Mount Lebanon's best-known sights, linking Jounieh Bay with Harissa; its lower station is about 17 km northeast of Beirut in a straight line. It officially opened in 1965; the idea came from young people on a school trip to the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine who dreamed of a way to carry visitors straight from Jounieh to Harissa. The line is about 1.5 km long and the ride takes only nine minutes, passing over the coastal highway and then climbing the steep, pine-forested mountain to 650 metres at Harissa. The small coloured cabins rise over rooftops and trees, and as they climb the view opens over the curving bay of Jounieh, its white buildings along the coast and the blue sea to the horizon, with Beirut visible on clear days. Visitors ride up from Jounieh, stroll Harissa and take in the view over the bay, then ride back down. The trip is loveliest at sunset. Check the UK Foreign Office's current Lebanon guidance before you go.
