Zanzibar's only national park, a dense tropical forest and mangrove swamps in the middle of Unguja island. Its stars are the red colobus monkeys, a rare species found nowhere else in the world but Zanzibar. You walk with a guide along shady trails between tall trees and tropical plants, watching troops of red colobus with their comical faces leap overhead and munch leaves, quite unbothered by visitors. You may also spot Sykes' monkeys and many birds and butterflies. In another part of the park a wooden boardwalk runs over the mangrove forest, where trees grow in salt water on stilt-like roots, and the guide explains their role in protecting the coast and sheltering fish and crabs. The ticket includes the compulsory guide, about USD 10 to 12 per visitor guides. The visit is easy and family-friendly, and is usually combined with the east-coast beaches or a spice tour.
