Mumbai's best-known beach, a long strip of sand on the Arabian Sea in upmarket Juhu, one of the city's most expensive districts and home to many Indian film stars, whose fans sometimes gather outside their nearby homes. It is a place for strolling rather than swimming, which isn't advised because of currents and water quality; locals walk here morning and evening, children ride horses and camels on the sand, and street entertainers appear on holidays. Its food stalls are famous, selling pav bhaji, bhel puri, roasted corn and ice cream, mostly vegetarian, and families fill the beach at sunset. The beach is free and always open, loveliest at sunset. It gets very crowded at weekends and festivals, so watch your belongings and pick clean, busy stalls.
