Juknokwon is a bamboo forest in the town of Damyang, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, and the best-known bamboo forest in the country. Damyang has long been famous for its bamboo and bamboo crafts, and the forest covers a small hill above the town. The garden opened to visitors in 2003, with many walking paths between the tall bamboo stems, each with its own name and theme. Under the bamboo the air is several degrees cooler than outside, so people come in summer. Bamboo is said to give off fresh, clean air. You see tall, straight green stems rising to the sky on both sides of narrow paths, with light slipping between them in thin rays. Bamboo leaves rustle in the wind, and along the paths are small wooden pavilions, rocky streams and a small stone amphitheatre. It is at the edge of Damyang, a short walk from the centre. Early morning, before the tour buses arrive, is the best time.
