'Top of Europe' — the continent's highest railway station at 3,454 metres, a miracle of 1912: through a seven-kilometre tunnel bored in the Eiger's and Mönch's belly the Swiss ran a cog train up to the eternal-snow saddle between Jungfrau and Mönch, where the Aletsch glacier — the Alps' longest, UNESCO-listed — spreads a white sea to the horizon. Above: the Sphinx observatory with terraces over the white river; the Ice Palace carved in living glacier; the Snow Plateau of perpetual play; restaurants — the famous Indian one serving the Bollywood public that made the summit its first shrine — and Europe's highest post office for a stamped boasting card. The journey itself is the tale: successive trains from Interlaken via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, shortened since 2020 by the Eiger Express cable car — and going by one valley, returning by the other, closes the golden circle complete.

For the Gulf visitor a familiar face of family travel: the summit is superbly global, Arabic heard on the plateau every summer.
The ~7am train from Interlaken Ost via Lauterbrunnen (sit right for its waterfall), Kleine Scheidegg, the tunnel to the top before ten — three hours above, then down to Grindelwald by the new Eiger Express, an hour in the village, Interlaken by late afternoon. For route-cutters: Eigergletscher station satisfies some at half price with its glacier — a small local secret.
