Junín de los Andes is a quiet town in southwestern Neuquén, on the right bank of the Chimehuin river and on National Route 40, the road that runs the length of Argentina along the Andes. It began in 1883 as a military post, grew into a farming town and is now the head town of Huiliches department. It is known as the «national trout capital»: its rivers, above all the Chimehuin, are among the most famous fly-fishing waters in Patagonia, drawing anglers from around the world in season. It is also the nearest gateway to Lanín National Park, Lake Huechulafquen and the Lanín volcano, whose entrance lies about 22 kilometres away. Wandering is free; it lies about forty kilometres from San Martín de los Andes, so it fits into a lakes route or serves as a quieter, cheaper base.
