Kadavu is Fiji's fourth largest island, south of Viti Levu, about 100 km in a straight line from Suva. It is a rugged, mountainous island ringed by the Great Astrolabe Reef, and one of the least developed parts of Fiji. The island covers 411 square kilometres and is about 60 km long, narrowing in places to just 365 metres across. Its highest mountain is Nabukelevu, or Mount Washington, at 805 metres on the western end. The main centre is Vunisea, with an airport, a school and a hospital, and most people live by subsistence farming. About 75% of its original rainforest still stands, and four bird species live nowhere else, among them the velvet dove and the crimson shining-parrot. The Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the largest barrier reefs in the world, curves around the island and is one of Fiji's premier diving areas, with channels where some protected passages charge entry fees. There are few roads, so getting around is mostly by boat; arrange transfers with your accommodation. Small planes fly to Vunisea airport. Respect the villages and their customs, and ask permission before entering.
