An old quarter at the heart of Malang behind the Kayutangan shopping street, which has kept dozens of Dutch colonial-era houses from the early twentieth century, with white facades, wooden shutters and coloured doors. Its residents revived it as a heritage village that welcomes visitors, making it a window on old Malang. You wander winding lanes between the old houses, past vintage household items, bicycles, radios and photographs displayed outside, small cafes serving Javanese coffee and street food, an old well and small historic graves. The main street outside has been refreshed with a promenade, benches and classic lamps. Entry is a token fee at the lane entrances; people live in these lanes, so respect their privacy. Come in the late afternoon as it cools, sit in a cafe, then continue in the evening along the lit Kayutangan promenade, close to the square and the grand mosque.
