A turquoise river
Glass-clear water.
A river of clear fresh water in an astonishing turquoise blue, flowing through dense rainforest on Waigeo island, away from the sea. Its colour comes from pure limestone water springing from the mountains, so the sandy bed and rocks show as if through glass. Visitors arrive by car then on foot or by small boat through the forest, swim in the cool, refreshing water, swing on ropes from the trees to jump into the river, or float with the gentle current. The forest around is full of birdsong, including birds of paradise in the surrounding areas. A small fee goes to the village the route passes through, and a local guide helps. The road is rough in places, and trips are usually arranged from Waisai. It is a change from the sea, fun for families on a hot day. Bring modest swimwear, insect repellent and food, as services are few.
