Treetop platforms
Above the valley.
A community-run tourism village in the green Menoreh hills west of Yogyakarta, famous for wooden platforms built on top of tall trees overlooking the blue Sermo reservoir and rolling forests, a scene now among Yogyakarta's best-known photographs. Visitors climb to the platforms on wooden ladders with safety ropes and take photos suspended above the valley, helped by village photographers for a fee. There is also a zipline over the forest, walking trails and simple lodges to stay in. The village entry fee is a token one, with each platform a small separate charge covering ropes and sometimes photos. The road is steep and mountainous at the end. Come early in the morning before the mist and heat, for clearer views and shorter queues. It is not for those afraid of heights; follow the safety instructions.
