Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle is a historic castle in the city of Kamianets-Podilskyi, in western Ukraine, in the historic region of Podilia. It is one of the most striking castles in Eastern Europe, set above the canyon of the Smotrych River, and its name comes from kamin, the word for stone. Historical records place it in the early 14th century, though digs show the area was settled earlier. It was first built to guard the bridge linking the city to the mainland, on a peninsula carved by the winding Smotrych. Many powers held it and each added to it, and the complex takes in the Old Castle, the New Castle and the fortified Old Town. You see stone walls and round and square towers with red and dark conical roofs, above rocks that look over the canyon. A long stone bridge with lamps leads to it, the green river valley and small houses lie below, sunset turns the stone gold, and it is lit at night. It is about 89 km from the city of Khmelnytskyi and about 18 km from Khotyn Fortress in a straight line. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the Khmelnytskyi region, and opening can change at short notice, so read the current advice before any planning.
