Karijini National Park lies in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region of north-western Australia, about 1,055 km from Perth. It covers 627,000 hectares, making it the second largest national park in Western Australia, and its rocks are estimated at 2.5 billion years old. It was once called Hamersley Range National Park and was renamed in 1991. The best time to visit is May to September, when days are warm and nights cold; in summer temperatures pass 38°C with a risk of bushfires. It is known for its deep gorges, waterfalls and pools. You see narrow gorges with walls of red rock stacked like piles of books, small waterfalls dropping between them into clear green pools. On the plateau grow round yellow spinifex and white gums, with brown mountains on the horizon. Dales Gorge is about 78 km from the town of Tom Price in a straight line. Some trails go down to the gorge floors over slippery rock, so follow the signs.
