A beautiful, calm beach on Phuket's west coast, about a kilometre and a half long and divided into Kata Yai to the north and Kata Noi to the south. Its sand is white and soft, its water clear, it is framed by green hills, and a small island offshore adds to the scene. Kata suits families better than Patong: the atmosphere is quieter, swimming is comfortable in the dry season, and behind it are hotels, restaurants and services without the nightlife noise. In the monsoon from about May to October the waves grow and it becomes a surfing spot, when red flags must be respected. The beach is free and always open, with umbrellas and loungers for hire. The Karon Viewpoint is close by, from which you see Kata, Karon and Kata Noi together in a famous view. The best times are morning for swimming and sunset for the view. For a quiet stay with children in Phuket, Kata is one of the best choices, a quarter of an hour from Patong.
