A short aerial ropeway opened in 1959 that climbs Mount Tenjō from the shore of Lake Kawaguchi in about three minutes, its cabin rising 219 metres along a 460-metre cable to a viewing deck over the lake, Aokigahara forest and Mount Fuji. Locally it is the «Kachi Kachi» ropeway, after a Japanese folk tale about a rabbit and a raccoon dog, which is why rabbit statues and characters from the story fill the top station. From the upper deck the whole lake and the town spread out below, and on clear days Mount Fuji stands in full view. Walking trails start from the top, and the mountain is known for its autumn colour. A return ticket is about 1,000 yen, and it runs in daytime on hours that change with the seasons, per visitor guides. It is about a 15-minute walk from Kawaguchiko Station; arrive early on holidays to avoid the queues.
