Kazan Cathedral is a major Orthodox church on Nevsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg's main street, dedicated to the icon of Our Lady of Kazan. It is famous for the curving stone colonnade that embraces the square in front, about 900 metres in a straight line from Saint Isaac's Cathedral. Building began in 1801 and took ten years, finishing in 1811. The architect Andrey Voronikhin took St Peter's Basilica in Rome as his model, in the Empire style. A semicircular colonnade of huge Corinthian columns sweeps out in front, ending in two wings with gateways, and a green dome on a drum rises over the centre. A small garden and fountain sit beside the cathedral, and the square is busy with passers-by and visitors all day. The cathedral is a working church, so dress modestly; women usually cover their heads, and keep quiet during services. It is about 800 metres from the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Russia, and non-Russian bank cards may not work, so read the current advice before you plan.
