Kekova is a rocky island off the Lycian coast of southern Turkey, facing the mainland village of Kaleköy, which stands on the site of ancient Simena, in the Demre district of Antalya Province, about 22 km east of Kaş in a straight line. Grave inscriptions and coins show that Simena existed in the 4th century BC. Part of the ancient town is now under the sea, with the remains of baths lying in the water. A medieval castle stands on the hill above the village, with a small theatre carved into the rock inside it. Kaleköy's stone houses step down among olive trees and flowers below the castle walls, overlooking a calm, very clear bay dotted with small islands and boats. On the facing shore of Kekova, walls, steps and house foundations show beneath the shallow water. Visitors arrive by boat from Üçağız or Kaş, passing over the «sunken city» on the Kekova shore, then land at Kaleköy to climb to the castle. Swimming over the sunken ruins is forbidden to protect them, and kayak tours run in the bay.
