Kel-Suu is a blue-green lake narrowing between high rock walls in the mountains of Naryn Region, close to the border with China. It lies at about 3,500 m and looks like a fjord filled with still water. It is among the most remote and hardest to reach of Kyrgyzstan's landscapes, so you are unlikely to meet crowds. The place is also known as Kol-Tetiri, and the name Kel-Suu is said to refer to water that comes, since the lake's level changes a great deal. There are no monuments or guesthouses here, only border-area pasture. In January 2025 the 24.kg news agency reported a local decision to ban tour vehicles from the area around the lake. The water first appears beyond large boulders, then brown walls recede towards peaks with patches of snow. The mountains are mirrored on the surface when the air is calm, and the colour shifts between green and turquoise with the light. The finest views come from the low hills at its end, where the water stretches far away between the walls. It is about 95 km in a straight line from Naryn city, but guides quote 4 to 5 hours on a rough track to the Kok-Kiya valley, then about 2 hours on foot or horseback. You need a border-zone permit about two weeks ahead, and travelling with a Naryn company is easiest. The season is July and August, and many yurt camps close by October. Check the current vehicle rules first.
