A narrow cleft in Jebel Khazali inside the Wadi Rum Protected Area, hemmed in by high red rock walls, and a fixed stop on the desert's 4x4 tours. Its walls are known for ancient carvings cut into the rock, from old inscriptions to drawings of people and animals, left over the centuries by desert dwellers and passing caravans. You walk a short way in, in the shade of the cleft, until the rocky floor narrows and further progress needs climbing, so most people stop at the carvings and turn back. A visit takes 15 to 30 minutes, and the shade is welcome at midday. It can only be reached on a tour of the reserve, best arranged with a local guide from Rum village or your camp.
