Khnifiss is a national park on Morocco's southwestern Atlantic coast, near the town of Akhfenir between Tan-Tan to the north and Tarfaya to the south, about 55 km east of Tarfaya in a straight line. National Route 1 runs through it along the coast. The park was created in 2006 to protect desert, wetland and coastal dune landscapes and covers 1,850 square kilometres. Its coastal section holds the Khnifiss lagoon, the largest lagoon on the Moroccan coast, while its inland section has salt flats, dunes and limestone plateaus typical of the Sahara. The lagoon is an important bird breeding ground, home all year to species of ducks and gulls. The calm blue water stretches between high golden dunes and fields of green salt plants, gathering flocks of pink flamingos and shorebirds. On the other side, open desert runs on and on under a wide sky. Visitors ride small boats with local fishermen to explore the lagoon and watch the birds, and climb the dunes on the far shore. The area is remote, so come by car and carry water; autumn and spring are best for migrating birds.
