A town belonging to the Emirate of Sharjah on the UAE's east coast, facing the Gulf of Oman and surrounded by Fujairah territory. Its name means «creek of the two jaws», for the bay the mountains hold in their grip, and it has a natural deep-water port, one of the country's main container harbours. North of the centre runs a white-sand beach with shady trees and a corniche with gardens and paths, and its waters are known for coral reefs popular with divers. Steep mountains ring the town, rising to about 1,023 metres. At the foot of Jebel Al Sayed stands the Khor Fakkan Amphitheatre, opened on 14 December 2020: a Roman-style semicircle for about 3,600 people with a stone facade of 234 arches and 295 columns, pictured on the 10-dirham note since 2022, with a 45-metre man-made waterfall beside it. In the old market, Hisn Khorfakkan, a museum opened in 2019 on the design of the old fort, charges 10 AED for adults, according to the Sharjah Museums Authority. The beach and corniche are free. The road from Sharjah crosses the mountains through tunnels and past viewpoints, and winter is the best season for swimming and walks.
