The Khunjerab Pass is a high mountain pass on the Karakoram Highway at the border between Pakistan and China. Broad plains and mountains lie under snow most of the year, with short summer pastures and a large stone border gate at the top of the road. The pass stands at 4,693 m and is the highest paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway. The road across it was completed in 1982. Its name means «house of the waterfall» in the local Wakhi language. It lies inside Khunjerab National Park, where visitors see yaks and marmots. Visitors drive up from the Hunza valley, stop at the border gate to take photos, and sometimes spot marmots among the rocks. It is about 94 km in a straight line northeast of Hunza. The air is very thin at this height, so do not stay long, and bring warm clothes even in summer. The road is usually closed in winter.
