A calm bay on Lampung's south coast, about three hours by car from the city, famous for the pods of dolphins that pass through the ocean off it, sometimes in their hundreds, of two kinds: the large grey bottlenose dolphin and the smaller spinner dolphin that leaps and twists in the air. Small, narrow wooden boats leave the bay at dawn, around six, for the open sea, where the dolphins usually appear early in the morning; the trip takes two to three hours. In the bay itself is a small island with a white beach where visitors stay in simple lodges, with clear water for snorkelling, and the rocky Shark's Teeth beach is nearby. The boat for dolphin watching costs roughly three hundred and fifty to five hundred thousand rupiah per boat, holding three or four people. The road to the bay is narrow and rough in places. It is best to stay a night in the bay so you can head out at dawn. Sightings are not guaranteed and the open sea can be rough, so wear a life jacket; the trip does not suit anyone prone to seasickness.
