The catastrophic 1421 flood's legend: as waters fell they found a cradle afloat, balanced by a cat leaping its rims โ the infant asleep and dry. Kinderdijk immortalised the child, the tale told at the centre โ symbol of a people negotiating its children with the sea.
Summer's golden formula: morning Waterbus from the Erasmus, three hours of walk, both mills and boat, cafรฉ lunch or dyke picnic โ returning by reverse Waterbus, or hired bicycle along dykes to historic Dordrecht and the train home: a complete Dutch water day.
In two senses: modern pumping stations beside them carry the daily load โ while the mills, fully maintained, turn on posted days with volunteer millers genuinely living in some under live-and-run contracts. And in historic emergency (the 1953 flood) Holland ran them as real reserve โ a sleeping fleet, not dรฉcor.

Nineteen mills of 1740 file along their channels as built โ the world's largest gathering of historic windmills and the UNESCO site that abbreviates Holland: a nation below sea level pumping its existence by wind for eight centuries, the scene painted on every gift tin standing real in its own breeze. The channel-side walk is effectively free (the ticket buys the full experience): two museum mills entered as millers' homes where families lived inside the turning machine โ box-beds among gears โ boats cutting the channels, and a centre explaining the 'land stolen from water' miracle in immersive show. From Rotterdam the arrival adventure is half the joy: the Waterbus cleaves the Lek river forty minutes from the Erasmus quay to the mills โ pure Dutch sailing โ with the dyke-top bicycle for completists.
