King Nikola's Palace, or Villa Topolica, is a former royal summer residence in Bar on the Montenegrin coast, near the waterfront in the town centre. It belonged to the ruling Petrović-Njegoš dynasty. King Nikola I built the palace in 1885 as a gift to his daughter Princess Zorka and her husband Prince Petar Karađorđević. The complex includes the large and small palaces, a chapel, guardhouses and a winter garden, and a spacious ballroom was added in 1910. A wooden pier once stood in front of the palace; between 1866 and 1916 King Nikola owned ten yachts, one of them bought from the novelist Jules Verne. Today the palace houses the Bar city museum and hosts festivals, concerts, exhibitions and literary events. The elegant palace has a pale-yellow facade, arched windows and a sloping roof with dormers, set in a garden of palms, Mediterranean trees and flower beds close to the sea. Visitors tour the museum's collections on the town's history, stroll the surrounding garden and attend summer cultural events there. It is close to the port and the promenade.
