Kings Park is a 400.6-hectare park on Mount Eliza, overlooking the Swan River and central Perth in Western Australia. It is the state's most popular visitor destination, with over five million people coming each year to walk, picnic and take in the wide view across the water. It mixes lawns, botanical gardens and natural bushland, with two thirds kept as native bush. It holds over 324 native plant varieties, 215 fungi species and 80 bird species. Each September it hosts the Kings Park Festival, Australia's largest wildflower show. Most visits begin in the area overlooking the city, with the State War Memorial, great trees and lawns looking over the river and the Darling Range. Paths lead into the botanic garden with its Australian plants, and there is an elevated walkway among the trees and a tower that visitors can climb. Tree-lined streets carry small plaques to service men and women who died in the two world wars, so walk there quietly. It is 2.9 km in a straight line from central Perth, reached by bus or taxi, or on foot if you like a climb. The city view is finest at sunset or after dark. Bring water and a hat in the hot summer, come in September for the wildflowers, and feel free to sit on the grass with your food.
