Kirirom National Park is a green plateau at the eastern end of the Cardamom Mountains, west of Phnom Penh, with pine trees and air cooler than the plains. It is Cambodia's first officially designated national park, and its name means «Mountain of Joy». People from the capital come to escape the heat, looking for waterfalls, walks and calm. It was established in 1993 and sits on a plateau with a mean elevation of 670 m, its highest peak being Phnum Chivit at 949 m. Daytime temperatures average about 25°C and fall at night. A press report says it was a favourite of the former King Sihanouk. Tours also mention the neighbouring Chambok area. You walk among tall pines that drop their needles on the ground, with damp meadows and small streams across the plateau. The best-known sight is Chambok waterfall, about 20 m high according to one source, after a walk of about 3 km. Insect-eating plants grow here too, and the plateau has a resort. The park is about 120 km west of Phnom Penh according to Wikipedia, and National Road 4 passes about 24 km from it. You need a private car or tour, and should not expect public transport inside. Bring a jacket for the evening and suitable shoes. November to February is the best time, while rain strengthens the waterfall but makes the road harder.
