One of the world's most beautiful botanical gardens, on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, founded in 1913 to conserve South Africa's native plants and part of the UNESCO-listed Cape Floral Region. The cultivated garden spreads across wide lawns and slopes, ringed by natural forest climbing the mountain. It holds collections of proteas, the national flower, fynbos plants, ancient cycads and a garden of fragrant and medicinal plants. Its best-known feature is a raised walkway through the treetops that curves like a snake above the forest, with views over the garden and the mountain. Hiking paths to the top of Table Mountain start in the garden, and on summer evenings concerts are held on its lawns. Tickets are R270 for adults from outside Africa and SADC, and the garden opens from 8 am to 7 pm from September to March and until 6 pm from April to August, per the South African National Biodiversity Institute.
