A small green island off Mae Haad beach in north-west Koh Phangan, joined to the main island by a narrow white sandbar that emerges at low tide, so visitors walk from beach to island with turquoise sea on both sides, one of the island's loveliest sights. The waters around Ko Ma are protected and among the best snorkelling spots on Koh Phangan, with coral close to shore and plenty of colourful fish. Mae Haad beach opposite is calm, with shallow water suited to children and a few resorts and simple restaurants. Nearby, a hillside viewpoint looks down on the sandbar. Visiting is free. The sandbar appears at low tide and is covered at high tide, so check the tide times before crossing so you are not stranded on the little island. Use reef-safe sun cream and don't stand on the coral. The Gulf of Thailand's heaviest rains fall from October to December, unlike the Andaman coast. A fun half day for families; early morning is calmest and best for photos.
