The Kobarid Museum is a history museum devoted to the First World War and especially the Soča Front, which ran through these mountains. It occupies an old manor house in the middle of the small town of Kobarid, and it is the leading place to understand what happened in this valley more than a century ago. The museum was founded in 1990 and opened on 20 October that year, in a building that was once the Mašera family's country house. Its displays give particular attention to the Twelfth Battle of the Isonzo, known as the Miracle at Kobarid, and cover life at the front and behind the lines alike in a historical way. The collection fills twelve rooms on two floors with photographs, maps, documents and equipment. A scale model of the nearby peaks helps you picture the front line, cableways and mountain paths clearly, and a cannon and a shell stand outside the entrance. The ground-floor corridor holds memorials to fallen soldiers from both sides, and some exhibits may be hard for young children. The museum lies about 13.3 km from the Tolmin Gorges and 10.4 km from Bovec in a straight line. It is a good choice for a rainy day in the valley. Treat the memorials with respect and allow time for the texts. Check opening hours before coming, since they change with the season.
