A long beach running about ten kilometres along the Black Sea at Kobuleti north of Batumi, a favourite summer resort with Georgian and Armenian families and calmer than Batumi. Fine pebbles and dark sand, backed by a long promenade shaded by pines and eucalyptus that follows the sea past cafés and hotels. In summer the beach fills with umbrellas and loungers for hire, water sports and simple restaurants, and the evening sunset over the sea is one of the coast's finest. Near the town are the mountain forests of Kintrishi reserve and the Ispani marshes with their rare plants. The beach is free. The sea is calm for most of the summer but waves rise on some days, so obey the flags. Adjara has a large Muslim community, so Kobuleti has mosques and halal restaurants, and many family hotels at fair prices. It is about half an hour by car or train from Batumi, good for a day trip or a quiet summer stay.
