A hill rising to about 1,100 m on the edge of Almaty, its name meaning «blue hill», and one of the city's emblems. A cable car climbs to it from the city centre near Hotel Kazakhstan, its cabins gliding over houses and gardens to the top. From the summit all of Almaty spreads out beneath the snowy Tian Shan, and by evening the city becomes a sea of lights. At the foot of the hill stands the 372 m Almaty TV Tower, visible from most of the city. The top has a leisure park with viewing platforms, restaurants and cafés, a Ferris wheel, children's rides and a small zoo. The hill was closed for several years while its slope was stabilised and reopened in 2006 with a renovated cable car and viewing platforms. The cable car costs about 10,000 tenge return, per visitor guides, and rides at the top are paid separately. Come just before sunset to see the city by day and then lit up at night.
