A Japanese garden beside Himeji Castle, built in 1992 on the site of the lord's west residence to mark the 100th anniversary of the Himeji municipality. It covers about 3.5 hectares and is made up of nine adjoining gardens of different character, divided by white walls and traditional gates, among them a large pond garden with a waterfall and colourful koi, a bamboo garden, a flower garden, a pine garden and a flat garden. The garden has a teahouse serving the Japanese tea ceremony and a restaurant overlooking the pond. Its colours change with the seasons, weeping cherries in spring, deep green in summer and red maples in autumn, with the castle sometimes rising above its trees. Adult tickets are about 310 yen, and it opens 9:00-17:00, to 18:00 in summer, per visitor guides; a combined ticket with the castle is sold. It is a quiet break after climbing the castle.
