Konavle is a rural region and small municipality southeast of Dubrovnik at Croatia's southern tip, with Cavtat as its centre; its villages lie about 14 km southeast of Cavtat and about 26 km southeast of Dubrovnik in a straight line. About 8,500 people live in its 32 villages. People have lived in Konavle since the Stone Age, and the Romans built a trading centre on the site of the Greek colony of Epidaurus. Its name comes from the Latin «canalis», for the irrigation canals that carried water from a spring in the village of Vodovađa; remains of the Roman aqueduct still stand near the village. The area later belonged to the Republic of Ragusa, ruled by a count from his palace in Pridvorje, and the Soko Tower still stands in the far south. Green fields and vineyards stretch between the mountains and the sea, dotted with stone villages. Old stone water mills with tiled roofs stand on clear streams, with arched stone bridges among the trees, and quiet rocky coves such as Molunat line the coast. Visitors drive between the villages, stopping at the old mills and rural restaurants by the water, visit the Count's Palace in Pridvorje and the Soko Tower, and swim in the coves. It makes an easy day trip from Dubrovnik, and spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons.
