A mountain range in southern Serbia whose highest point is Pančić's Peak at 2,017 metres. The central part of its plateau was declared a national park in 1981 and now covers 121 square kilometres of forest and alpine meadow. On its slopes is the Kopaonik ski resort, one of the largest in South-East Europe, with 25 lifts carrying thousands of skiers an hour. The snow season usually runs from November to April, with around 200 sunny days a year. In summer the mountain becomes a place for hiking and mountain biking among dense conifer forests, flowering meadows and slopes, with long views over ranges of mountains, and hotels and chalets cluster around the resort centre. Entry to the park is free; ski lifts and activities cost extra. The best ski season is December to March and the best hiking June to September, and bring warm clothes even in summer.
