Koper is Slovenia's fifth-largest city and the main urban centre of the Slovenian coast, in the Istrian region in the southwest of the country, about 13 km east of Piran and 12 km south of Trieste in Italy in a straight line. It has Slovenia's only container port. Its old town holds notable landmarks, above all the 15th-century Praetorian Palace and the Loggia, both in Venetian Gothic style, as well as the 12th-century Carmine Rotunda and St Nazarius' Cathedral with its 14th-century bell tower. In Italian the city is called Capodistria. At the heart of the old town is a wide paved square, with the white Praetorian Palace and its battlements and outside staircase on one side, the arcaded Loggia facing it, and the square stone bell tower rising above. Narrow lanes lead off between colourful houses of Venetian character, sloping down to the waterfront. Visitors wander the square and lanes, admire the bell tower and palace, and sit in the cafés. Cruise ships call here, it makes a short trip from Piran or Trieste, and evenings on the square are calm and lovely.
