Koprivshtitsa is a historic town in Sofia Province in central Bulgaria, on the Topolnitsa River among the Sredna Gora mountains, 111 km east of Sofia and about 64 km in a straight line from Plovdiv. Its name comes from the Bulgarian word for «nettle». The town keeps the atmosphere of the 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival, with 383 architectural monuments from the period, most restored to their original appearance. Its museum houses hold collections of weaving, embroidery, folk costumes, traditional jewellery and woodwork. Since 1965 the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore has been held here roughly every five years, gathering thousands of musicians and craftspeople. Cobbled lanes are lined with houses painted blue, red and yellow, with jutting wooden upper floors and tiled roofs, behind high stone walls and wooden gates. Small arched stone bridges cross the river, and forested hills ring the town. A combined ticket covers the museum houses. The town is small enough to explore on foot in a day and quiet outside festival times.
