Książ Castle stands on the northern edge of Wałbrzych in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland, about 8 km from central Wałbrzych and 60 km southwest of Wrocław in a straight line. It is the largest castle in Silesia and the third-largest in Poland after Malbork and Wawel. The Silesian duke Bolko I built the castle between 1288 and 1292, and it is first documented in 1293. Long known by its German name, Fürstenstein, it grew over the centuries with wings in many styles, from Gothic to Baroque to the 20th century. It lies inside the Książ Landscape Park in the Sudeten mountains. The huge castle sits on a rocky edge above the deep Pełcznica gorge, wrapped in thick forest. Conical towers, green roofs and pink, white and stone facades stand side by side, with terraced flower gardens stepping down below. Visitors tour the castle's halls, apartments and terraces and walk the terraced gardens and forest paths around the gorge. Flower shows are held in the gardens in spring, and there is a stud farm nearby.
