An artistic group founded in Munich in 1911 around Kandinsky and Franz Marc, joined by Macke, Klee and others. It was not a single style but a position: that art expresses an inner spiritual reality rather than the appearance of things, and that colour and form carry meaning in themselves. That opened the way to abstraction. The group ended with the First World War, which killed both Macke and Marc.

A museum of twentieth-century German and contemporary art, in a building by Axel Schultes opened in 1992 on Bonn's Museum Mile. The building is itself among the important works of German architecture of the 1990s: tall white spaces lit naturally through roof openings, a broad central stair, and clean geometry that makes the building a background to the work rather than a competitor. The collection centres on August Macke, among the leading painters of German Expressionism and a founder of the Blue Rider group with Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Macke lived in Bonn, and this holds the largest collection of his work in the world. He was killed at the front in 1914 aged twenty-seven, months after the First World War began. Alongside him are works by the German Expressionists and a collection of German art after 1945 — Beuys, Baselitz, Richter and others. It is among the most important modern art museums in western Germany outside Cologne and Düsseldorf.
