A historic tourist train climbing from Cairns to the mountain village of Kuranda, on a line cut in 1891 through a rugged rainforest-clad range, counted among the great engineering feats of its day, with tunnels and bridges suspended over gorges. The journey takes about two hours in heritage timber carriages, passing through fifteen tunnels and dozens of bridges and curling around steep slopes with views of the coast and the gorge, stopping at the Barron Falls lookout. In Kuranda you can spend hours among its markets selling crafts and Aboriginal art, the butterfly sanctuary, the bird park and restaurants. Many then return on the Skyrail over the forest to complete the experience. Tickets are one way or return and can be combined with the Skyrail in one ticket, with prices on the operator's site. Booking ahead is best in busy seasons.
