In about twenty-two minutes a glass cabin lifts you more than a thousand metres: from Derbent station at the western end of Lake Sapanca into a beech forest at about 1,420 m, and from the humid warmth of the lakeside into air that wants a jacket even in summer. This is the Kartepe gondola, opened on 25 March 2024, some 4.8 km long with over seventy ten-person cabins, and its upper station is Kuzuyayla Nature Park itself. The reward at the top is genuinely rare: the whole of Lake Sapanca on one side and İzmit Bay and the sea on the other, in a single view. The park is plainer than its name suggests. It is a stretch of beech and rhododendron forest with scattered chestnut, declared a nature park in 2011 and operated by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality: picnic tables under the trees, a rustic restaurant, a prayer room, toilets, short walking paths to open clearings where everyone takes the photograph. There are no monuments and no museums; the pleasure is the ascent, the air and the view, then a couple of hours of sitting among trees. The Kartepe ski centre is about a kilometre further up the same road. From Sapanca there are two ways in. Drive the southern lake road to Derbent in about twenty minutes, park at the lower station and ride up: foreigners pay 500 TL return, children under seven go free, and the gondola runs daily, roughly 10:00-19:00 in summer and shorter in winter, with pauses in high wind or severe cold and an annual maintenance closure of about two weeks in mid-September (14-27 September in 2026). Or drive to the top through Maşukiye and the winding Kartepe road in 35 to 45 minutes and pay the park gate: 40 TL per person plus 110 TL per car. Gulf families with a hire car generally do better with the gondola; the mountain road is narrow, tight with hairpins and jammed at weekends. When you come changes everything. In August the park is a refuge from the lakeside heat, close to ten degrees cooler, but fog can swallow the view for hours, so go before noon. From December to February the place is under snow and a short sledding run opens, with sleds for hire at a separate charge, which is what children come for, though the roads need chains or winter tyres and the gondola queues at weekends. Late spring brings the rhododendron bloom and a near-empty park, the best time for anyone after quiet rather than snow.

The gondola, most of the time: you park at Derbent twenty minutes from Sapanca, ride up in 22 minutes with an open view, and skip a winding mountain road that jams at weekends and needs chains in snow. Driving is cheaper for a big family (110 TL per car against 500 TL per gondola passenger) and it is the only option during the mid-September maintenance fortnight or when wind stops the gondola, or if you plan to carry on to the Kartepe ski centre.
Yes, if you come by gondola: the cabins take a pushchair, the clearings by the upper station are level enough, and toilets, prayer room and restaurant are a few steps away. The forest paths are earth and steep in places, so treat them as walking, not wheeling. In snow the sledding run alone will fill two hours for little ones.
