The sun bear.
An education centre protecting the sun bear, the world's smallest bear, native to Southeast Asia's forests and known for the golden patch on its chest that resembles a rising sun. The centre sits on the edge of the protected Sungai Wain forest and cares for bears rescued from captivity and illegal trade that cannot return to the wild. The bears live in large forest enclosures, and visitors walk raised wooden boardwalks above them to watch them climb trees and forage. Guides explain the sun bear's life and the threats it faces, and the best time to visit is morning or afternoon feeding, when the bears are active. Entry is free or by a donation that supports the centre. It is a calm, educational place, excellent for families. Ask about feeding times before going, and bring insect repellent. It is one of Balikpapan's key nature experiences.
