La Candelaria is a historic ranch built by the Jesuits in the Córdoba hills, part of the Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 together with the estancias of Santa Catalina, Jesús María, Caroya and Alta Gracia. It stands at about 1,200 metres on a high rolling plateau called the Pampa de San Luis. A landowner gave most of his land to the Jesuits in 1683, and they set up a ranch breeding mules to be sold for the trade with the mines of Upper Peru; its holdings grew to some 135,000 hectares. Its buildings are unique in Córdoba for their closed, fort-like plan, wrapped around a single rectangular courtyard and bringing together living quarters, stores and a small church. It opens Thursday to Sunday and on holidays from 11 am to 5 pm with guided visits, and the last stretch of road from La Higuera is dirt.
