La Chorrera is the tallest waterfall in Colombia, in the rural area of El Curí in the west of Choachí municipality, Cundinamarca, about 18 km east of central Bogotá in a straight line, beyond the city's eastern hills. The water drops 590 metres, the highest fall in Colombia and, according to local sources, the sixth highest in Spanish-speaking Latin America. It is fed by the La Palma stream and surrounded by damp cloud forest. Visitors reach it in about two hours along an old mule trail from the main road. Thin white water pours down a towering green cliff in long strands that break over the rocks, its top sometimes lost in the mist that covers the mountain. Ferns, climbing plants and dense trees line the trail. The trail is long and runs through damp mountain ground that is muddy in places, so wear suitable shoes and bring a rain jacket. Mornings are best, as cloud builds in the afternoon, and check the access arrangements before you go.
