The largest art museum in the western United States, on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile beside the famous La Brea Tar Pits. Founded in 1961, it holds more than 150,000 works from ancient times to the present and draws nearly a million visitors a year. Its newest building, the David Geffen Galleries by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, is a curving, sand-coloured concrete structure that stretches across Wilshire Boulevard itself, and it opened to the public in May 2026. In front stands the famous «Urban Light», rows of restored vintage street lamps that light up every evening and have become one of the most photographed spots in the city, and the collections include Islamic, Asian and American art. Tickets are $30 for adults from outside Los Angeles County, entry is free for everyone on the second Tuesday of each month, and the ground-floor sculptures are always free, per Time Out citing the museum. «Urban Light» can be seen free at any time.
