Lages is the largest city of the Planalto Serrano, the highland plateau of Santa Catarina, with about 165,000 people some 231 kilometres from Florianópolis; it is the state's largest municipality by area and the hub of the cold uplands that include Urubici and São Joaquim. In 1728, while a trail was being opened between the coast and this plateau, Francisco de Souza Faria came upon large herds of wild cattle, left over from old herds in the Vacaria fields. The area became a stop for drovers, and the city grew and thrived with the timber cycle until the 1950s, when it was the richest municipality in the state. Today it lives from cattle, farming, the timber industry and farm tourism: its farms take in guests to stay and share gaúcho life among wide fields and araucaria pines. Winters are cold, with frost often on the fields.
