Lake Corumbá is an artificial lake formed by damming the Corumbá River in southern Goiás, about ten kilometres from Caldas Novas, the town famous for its hot springs, and its place for water sports away from the warm pools. The lake began to fill in 1996 to supply the Corumbá I hydroelectric plant, fed by the Pirapitanga, Peixe, Piracanjuba and São Bartolomeu rivers. It covers about 65 square kilometres and reaches ninety metres deep near the dam, while its shoreline is so irregular that going round it means travelling more than a hundred kilometres. Jet skis, speedboats and windsurfing are all popular, and clubs, marinas and picnic spots line its banks. It makes a different day for anyone staying in Caldas Novas; most activities are run by private operators for a fee.
